Butterfly head

LABIAL PALPS

Labial palps are the mustache-like scaly mouthparts of adult butterflies that are on each side of the proboscis. These palps are covered with sensory hairs and scales, and test whether something is food or not.


LADYBUG

Ladybugs (also called lady birds and lady beetles) are small, oval-shaped winged insects. These shiny insects are usually red with black spots or black with red spots on the wing covers.


LAVA

Lava is molten rock. It usually comes out of erupting volcanoes.

LATEX

Latex is a milky substance that is tapped from rubber trees.

LEACHING

Leaching is a process in which water runs through soil and removes the rich soil humus and inorganic nutrients (like minerals); the water dissoves the nutrients and they wash away (this solution is called the leachate).

LEAF DRIP

Leaf drip is rain water that drip from leaves.


LEGS

All insects have six legs in their adult stage. These three pairs of legs are attached to the thorax, one pair in each segment of the thorax.


LEMUR

Lemurs are large-eyed primates from Madagascar. The biggest lemur alive today is the indri.


LEOPARD

Leopards are widely-distributed, spotted wild cats.

LEPIDOPTERA

Lepidoptera (meaning "scale wing") is an order of insects that is characterized by having four large, scaly wings and a spiral proboscis. Butterflies and moths belong to the order Lepidoptera. There are about 150,000 named species of butterflies and moth (over 87% are moths).


LESSER APES

The lesser apes (family HYLOBATIDAE) include the gibbon and siamang.


LESSER FLYING PHALANGER

This small marsupial (also known as the sugar glider) glides from tree to tree in Australia and nearby islands.

LIFE CYCLE

Insects go through a life cycle that begin with the egg and eventually result in the adult form. Butterflies and moths go through complete metamorphosis, with four different life stages: the egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Other insects undergo incomplete metamorphosis, where the juvenile (the nymph) is not very different from the adult from.

LIANA

Liana is a woody, climbing vine that grows on tree trunks in order to reach sunlight in the rainforest. Rattan, used for making wicker furniture, is made from liana vines.

LICHEN

Lichens are organisms that are a symbiosis between algae and fungus. The photosynthetic algae produces food and the fungus provides protection for the algae. Lichens can survive in a variety of conditions and are found worldwide.

LINNEAN SYSTEM

The Linnean System is a method of classifying organisms based on a simple hierarchical structure. Organisms are divided into groups using the following system: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species.


LIZARD

There are 2,500 types of lizards, many of which live in rainforests around the world.
